How to Get There (Without Losing Your Mind in Traffic)
Traffic in Downtown Miami during Ultra is legendary, and not in a good way. Driving is the worst option. Limited parking, closed streets, and you’ll spend more time looking for a spot than dancing.
Best Option: Metromover and Metrorail
The Metromover is free and drops you practically at the door. The closest stations are Bayfront Park and College/Bayside. The system usually extends hours during Ultra, so you can catch the last set stress-free.
If coming from farther away, connect via Metrorail to Government Center and transfer to the Metromover.
Brightline (If Coming from Outside Miami)
If you’re in Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Boca Raton, or Aventura, Brightline drops you at MiamiCentral Station, which is minutes walking from Bayfront Park. It’s the most comfortable option if coming from out of town.
Rideshare (Uber/Lyft)
Works, but prepare for surge pricing after each day. The designated drop-off and pick-up areas will be packed. If you can walk a few extra blocks to a less congested area, your wait will be shorter.
Taxi
Also works. Just remember traffic affects everyone equally.
What You Can (and Can’t) Bring
Ultra has strict rules on what gets in. Security is TSA-style with full pat-downs. If you bring something prohibited, you lose it and possibly get denied entry.
YES you can bring:
- Hydration pack (CamelBak-style) – EMPTY upon entry. There are free water stations inside to fill it.
- Clear bags made of plastic, vinyl, or PVC not exceeding 13×17 inches
- Fanny pack / waist bag
- Small clutch approximately hand-sized
- Earplugs – trust me, you’ll need them
- Sunscreen (non-aerosol)
- Sunglasses
- Portable charger for your phone
- Eye drops
- Prescription medications in original container with your name
NO you cannot bring:
- Backpacks (except specific hydration packs)
- Non-clear bags
- Water bottles (hydration pack must be empty)
- Food or drinks
- Professional cameras
- Umbrellas
- Selfie sticks
- Illegal drugs (zero tolerance, undercover police)
- Weapons of any kind
Pro tip: Keep your phone in a Ziploc bag. Miami weather changes fast and an unexpected downpour can ruin your phone.
Surviving 3 Days of Festival
Ultra is a marathon, not a sprint. If you don’t take care of yourself, the festival will leave you destroyed before the Sunday headliner hits. Here’s how to stay standing.
Hydration: Rule Number 1
Miami heat plus hours of dancing is a brutal combination. Dehydration is the number one reason people end up at the medical tent or have to leave early.
Bring your hydration pack and use it. Free water stations are all over the festival. Drink before you’re thirsty. If you’re drinking alcohol, alternate every drink with water. Your body will thank you the next day.
Eat Before You Enter
There’s food inside, but lines are long and prices are festival-level. Eat a solid meal before entering each day. And remember: there’s no re-entry. Once you’re out, you’re done.
Comfortable Shoes = Everything
You’ll walk over 30,000 steps in a day if you do it right. This is not the time to break in new shoes or try to look cute in platforms. Comfortable sneakers with good support. Your feet will be dancing for hours, treat them well.
Bonus: Compression socks help with swelling after standing all day.
Protect Your Ears
Ultra is LOUD. Those massive speakers can damage your hearing in under an hour. Tinnitus (that constant ringing in your ears) is real and permanent.
Invest in decent earplugs. Etymotic are popular among festivalgoers because they reduce volume without distorting the music. You still hear everything, just at a level that doesn’t destroy your hearing.
Sunscreen, Even If It’s Cloudy
Miami sun doesn’t forgive. Apply water-resistant sunscreen before entering and reapply during the day. Nobody wants to look like a cooked lobster by day two.
Download the Ultra App
The app has updated set times, the festival map, and important alerts. With over 150 artists across seven stages, you’ll have schedule conflicts. Plan ahead which sets are must-sees and which you can sacrifice.
The Buddy System: Non-Negotiable
Going with friends isn’t just more fun, it’s safer. Establish a meeting point in case you get separated (cell signal can be terrible with that many people). Look out for each other. If someone in your group doesn’t look right, don’t ignore it.
First aid tents are clearly marked throughout the festival. Staff in orange shirts that say “Mission Control” are there to help you with whatever you need, from directions to emergencies.
For Those Coming from Outside Miami
If you’re traveling to Miami specifically for Ultra, there are some additional things to consider.
Accommodations
Hotels near Bayfront Park fill up fast and prices spike. If you can, stay within walking distance of the festival. It eliminates transportation stress and you can go back to rest between days without complications.
Airbnbs in Brickell or Downtown also work well. Just verify the building rules, some don’t allow short-term rentals.
Travel Insurance: The Smart Play
Here’s something many don’t consider: you invest $500+ in the ticket, plus flights, hotel, and everything else. We’re easily talking $1,500-$3,000 in the complete trip.
Now imagine you get sick the day before and can’t go. Or your flight gets canceled. Or you hurt yourself dancing and need medical attention.
Travel insurance typically costs between 4% and 8% of the total trip cost. For a $2,000 trip, we’re talking $80-$160 for the peace of mind of knowing that if something goes wrong, you don’t lose everything.
It covers things like:
- Trip cancellation due to illness
- Canceled or delayed flights
- Medical emergencies (especially important if coming from abroad, because your regular insurance probably doesn’t cover you in the United States)
- Lost or stolen luggage
It’s not sexy, but it’s smart. Especially when you’ve invested so much in the experience.
If You’re Coming from Another Country
Your health insurance from your country almost certainly doesn’t cover you in the United States. And medical care here is expensive. An ER visit can easily cost you thousands of dollars.
Travel insurance with medical coverage isn’t optional if you’re coming from abroad. It’s essential.
After the Festival
Three days of Ultra will leave you exhausted in the best possible way. Plan recovery time. Sleep. Hydrate. Eat real food.
And while you process the memories, connect with the people you met. Follow the artists you discovered. Save the videos before your phone fills up.
Ultra is more than a festival. It’s an experience that changes you. But only if you come prepared to live it to the fullest.
See you at Bayfront Park.
